Community Discussions Evidence indicates that racism is on the increase in our communities.
As Strathclyde Police statistics indicate, there were 1206 racist incidents
recorded - an increase of 8.7% over the same period last year. (Strathclyde Police Diversity Report 2009/2010: April—September).
In relation to this, in the November 2009 Glasgow by-election, the British
National Party (BNP) claimed almost 5% of the votes—only 62 votes less than the Conservative party and 549 more than the Liberal Democrats.
With the recent rise in popularity of the BNP, they are currently claiming that several candidates will be standing across Scotland at the general election this year.
As the Glasgow Anti Racist Alliance, we are running a number of Community Discussion meetings across the country in the next few months on current issues.
The first of these discussions is on the rise of the BNP and will take place on 17th March 2010 from 12.00 noon – 2.00 pm at 78 Carlton Place, Glasgow.
A similar community discussion is being held on 10th March 2010 from
12.00 noon until 2.00 pm at the Edinburgh and Lothian Racial Equality
Council (ELREC) offices.

If you don’t challenge racism—who will?
