British smokers spend £92k in lifetime

The average British smoker spends £91,832.43 on cigarettes in a lifetime, according to research. That is a breathtaking 373,302 cigarettes — or 18,665 packs — for each smoker. On an annual basis, that breaks down to £1,493.22, which works out to 6,060 cigarettes, Clerical Medical, the financial products provider, determined after surveying 3,000 smokers.

The average smoker puffs through 15.24 cigarettes a day. Ian Willmore, a spokesman for Action on Smoking and Health said: “This survey shows just how wasteful and addictive smoking is. Not only could it kill you, but it also costs you enormous amounts of money to feed your habit.”

British smokers get through 72 billion cigarettes a year (3.6 billion packs), costing £17 billion. Those cigarettes could wrap around the Equator 160 times. The research also showed that 83 per cent of the respondents had tried to give up smoking at least three times.
